Q&A: Quick question on studio photography…Muslin backdrops and external shoe flash units/strobes?
Would a muslin backdrop against a wall prove to be too thin and hence, becoming transparent, when shooting with an external shoe mount flash unit or strobes??
For this type of setting, I would most likely use my 50mm F1.8 lens, making a very shallow DOF. With that DOF, would the transparency in the backdrop even be noticeable??
I will experiment with this when I do such photography, if I purchase such muslin backdrops in the future, which I may very well. but, I was just wondering if muslin with that type of flash is just a photography NO NO.
Canvas background seem to be much more expensive =/

No, a background such as you suggest, muslin, when placed against a wall and lit entirely from the front will not prove to be transparent. Additionally, if there is any objection to the texture of the fabric, it will not be apparent at a wide aperture such as 1.8-2.8 particularly if there is sufficient space between the subject and the background.
I always have preferred seamless paper backgrounds. Then you can have a background large enough to carry out over the floor as well to completely frame the photo allowing for full-length portraits or fashion shots, or nudes for example. It is available in many, many colors and is quite inexpensive compared to cloth backgrounds.
If you want an amorphous painted backdrop, you could spray paint it if you wished, but you might then be better off with a purchased one in that case.
