Hi,I did the following:

Question: My job is really boring! How do I make it through the day?
I am a “sales associate/cashier” at a shoe warehouse store and it is killing me.
After three weeks they haven’t trained me on cashier yet..which sucks. So, I just walk around the store straightening boxes and displays. Occasionally a person will need help or a display shoe need to be tied or i have to find where a shoe belongs, and those are exciting times. lol
I am starting to hate this job because of how boring it is. It takes NO brain power and my feet hurt!
What are some fun things that I could do while I walk around the store to keep me from getting so bored? Or, what can I do to just make it through my 5 hour shift. I am so thankful that I don’t work a full 8 hours…I would go mentally insane!
btw, I don’t have access to a computer/phone, and they do play music, but its a loop of like 20 songs and they are awful 90s-2003 pop/easy listening/crap songs. (the music itself drives me crazy!)

The pictures have nothing to do with the content!!

I’m not sure how badly you need to stick around, but maybe you should look for something else, before it drives you crazy completely. Before you do that though, try to approach your manager and ask about being trained on the register. If they still don’t seem to be inclined to do that, go apply somewhere else. Good luck!

Find a way to make it a game. See if you can compete with someone over who can straighten the most shoe boxes. Go on random quests for “ugliest shoe in the store” or “highest heel.”
If all else fails, make up stories in your head about the people who come into the store. Why are they there? What were they doing before shoe shopping. What will they do when they wear the shoes? What’s their deep dark secret?
If they were in a movie, who would play them?
I used to work in fast food and these are some tricks i used to survive.

OH! I’m so sorry. Been there before and it does suck. Try to think of other things while you are at work, since you don’t need your brain power to think about work. Especially, think of your dreams for the future and what career you hope to have then. I know it’s hard, but hang in there. Maybe, sing a song you like to yourself in your head!!

i would provide music that is stuff that you like but is stuff that they would approve of so at least you don’t have to fry your brain with the same stuff
what i do with days that i know are going to suck is plan something after with friends or by yourself (like a bubble bath) that is fun and that you can look forward to.

I have a similarly dull job. Why not fake a facial spasm when talking to customers. Although they may think your faking it they wont dare challenge you incase its real. Somtimes I put on a Scottish accent. try that (unless your scottish)

I used to work in a shoe warehouse. I would put headphones on unless I had to talk to customers. It helped me.

apply for other jobs which appeal to you…in the meantime try to be thankful that at least you have a job…also keep in mind that you’re not alone as many people are bored with their jobs!

If it’s only 5 hours , that leaves plenty of time later to go applying for better jobs .
Practice your interview technique in you head .
Get into product conversations with the shoppers to improve your grammar and communications skills .
Try to learn a new word every day that you can integrate into your applications for the new job .
Good luck

I’ve worked a number of retail jobs and unfortunately they are pretty much like this. The best thing for you do is to start bugging the manager to get you trained on the cash register. He or she probably just has forgotten about you. Managers usually just get so busy that they sometimes don’t make the time to train new people. There isn’t much you can do about the music. Usually stores change their music seasonally.
You can always look for another job. Waiting tables isn’t fun, but it’s at least not boring, and usually pays better than retail.
Just remember it could be a lot worse. Somebody out there has the job of cleaning up port-o-lets after festivals.
Good Luck!

That IS boring, man I’m glad to be an adult now and not have to do that kind of thing anymore. Although I’m bored to tears at my job right now…..but I’m leaving soon so I’m sure they don’t want to give me any new projects. And they never want to actually give me a project where I could make a real difference or truly affect something because I work for a large school district, and they don’t want change! Anyway, that’s neither here nor there.
You may want to try talking to your supervisor- you could tell her/him that you’d appreciate the opportunity to take on some extra duties, if possible – maybe some kind of bookkeeping or something that would look good on your resume. If your supervisor won’t give you anything else to do, you should look into getting another job. Most jobs when you’re young can get really boring though, EXCEPT waitressing- if you like to stay busy you should really look into becoming a hostess/waitress. I think you’d like it much better than what you’re doing now. Good luck!

I say be more proactive–it couldn’t hurt. I know that it’s annoying to be the eager beaver but at least that will show management that you’re ready for new assignments and tasks. Ask questions about how the register works, catch-up on the new inventory and promote it to customers, let the manager know that you’re willing to learn everything and that you’re available to do so. If that doesn’t work, there’s always McDonald’s:)
