Q&A: Can a heel on a shoe be lowered by an inch?
I purchased my wedding gown used, and it was tailored to a bride that was an inch taller than me, but wore flats the day of her wedding. I’ve found a few pairs of shoes that I LOVE, but they’re all about three inches, and I can’t go more than 2.5 inches because of the dress. Is it possible to buy the taller shoes and have an inch hacked off of them by an experienced shoemaker? Or will the arch of the shoe be all wrong?

Since the sole of the shoe is designed at an angle at the toe for the 3″ heel, lopping an inch off the heel might make the front of the toe come up too much. But, to find out, I suggest that you get a 1-inch-thick piece of wood or something, and stand with your toes on the wood and the heels on the ground. That will simulate the heels being shortened and you can find out if the shoes would feel funny with the heels an inch shorter.

I agree with Paul’s idea, and think that the front of the shoe might change if the heel were to be chopped off. However, there are tons of really cute bridal shoes out there (ones that don’t scream bride), silver sandals and such, on a 2″ heel (I am almost 5″9 without heels, and though my fiance is 6″1, I still wanted to look a lot shorter on my wedding day, so I sympathize with your dilemma of looking for cute shoes with little heels). Try zappos.com, you can actually pick the color and heel height and they have free shipping back and forth in case the shoes don’t fit.
